North Belfry
(Kitaindōganedō, Ōshōrō)
The North Belfry is one of the three halls at Shitennōji Temple designated for conducting memorial services for ancestors and the recently deceased. The bell is rung during these rites and for sutra chanting rituals. Its peal is said to be heard as far away as the Pure Land paradise. The bell can often be heard throughout the day, but it is nearly constant on days of significance for praying for the deceased, such as the spring and autumnal equinoxes.

Officially named Ōshōrō, or “Yellow Bell Tower,” the hall is more commonly known as the North Belfry (Kitaindōganedō).
